There Has To Be A Solution To The Need For Affordable Health Insurance

Tue, 09/18/2007 - 15:17 | ralph

The involvement of the states in health insurance has strongly affected the availability of affordable health insurance plans. A common state practice that drives up the cost of health insurance, and thus increases the number of uninsured, is mandating that insurers cover certain medical providers and benefits. Most mandates increase health premiums by a very small amount, but collectively they put upward pressure on rates. Requiring that all carriers offer only Cadillac-style health plans when many consumers may only be able to afford a Chevrolet just exacerbates the uninsured problem, while restricting consumer choice. This is not solving the problem of a need for affordable health insurance.

Low Cost Health Insurance For Everyone Would Be Nice

Maybe the problem with low cost health insurance is with the states. At least in the United States. Some states may be refusing to learn from their past mistakes. Many states have passed legislation or are considering ways to address the problem of the
uninsured, but some refuse to first undo the bad reforms of the past that have led to higher and higher premiums pushing low cost health insurance out of the picture. For example, Massachusetts, according to the United States Census, is facing some of the highest premiums
because of previous "reforms," but has passed comprehensive reform, mandating the purchase
of insurance, and creating a new health insurance market called the "Connector" in the hope of making health insurance more affordable.

Low Cost Health Insurance Should Be Available To All

In their attempts to provide low cost health insurance to all, many states in the United States have actually pushed up premiums making it more difficult to get coverage. For example, Maine's prior "reforms" led to skyrocketing health insurance premiums and few choices. Instead of repealing the disastrous reforms, Maine passed a government-run insurance plan meant to provide lower-cost insurance. Of course, the state taxed
those with private insurance to pay for it, further exacerbating the problem. These kinds of actions are not working to bring about the low cost health insurance that is so desperately needed.
